The fundamental beliefs of Sikhism, articulated in the sacred scripture Guru Granth Sahib, include faith and meditation on the name of the one creator, divine unity and equality of all humankind, engaging in selfless service, striving for social justice for the benefit and prosperity of all, and honest conduct and livelihood while living a householder's life. It is one of the youngest of the major world religions. There is a congregation every Sunday morning at the Gurudwara followed by Guru da langar (community meal).Sikhism is a monotheistic dharmic religion that originated in the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent about the end of the 15th century. Wellington Gurdwara is open on all the seven days of the week with a bhai ji in residence. It is the fifth largest religion in the world. In addition, there is a substantial number of Sikh students living in Greater Wellington region who are primarily from India, Malaysia and Fiji. The Sikh population in New Zealand is estimated to be approximately 19,000 out which around 600 live in Greater Wellington region. The first Sikh came to New Zealand in 1890.
The Sikh migration to New Zealand is more than 100 years old. The main objective of the Society is to preach the teachings of Sikhism, to provide religious services and ceremonies, arrange educational and recreational opportunities for the community, to foster a better understanding among the people of New Zealand about Sikh religion, to promote harmony among the followers of various religious creeds in New Zealand and to promote Punjabi language. Wellington Gurdwara is managed by the New Zealand Sikh Society (Wellington) Inc. (Punjabi is spoken by roughly 5,600 people in New Zealand) Wellington Gurdwara when established in 1997 was the southernmost Gurdwara of the worlds located in the coolest little capital in the world.
